2003's "Time Was" is a collection of original material with strong connections to jazz and, as can be seen from the song titles, is unashamedly nostalgic.

"I've always been drawn to melody, whether classical, pop or jazz. This is essentially, but not exclusively, a jazz album and consists of improvisation around themes and tunes. Improvisation can be academic and difficult to make sense of, but I first listened to jazz musicians whose improvisation was melodic and therefore made sense". Mike Bell, 2003
